PAM GRIMMOND

Pam has been working as an artist and printmaker since 2008, when she decided to change the direction of her life in order to refocus on her original journey as an artist. She began to make prints during her degree in Applied Creative Design at Harrogate College, between 2008-2011. Subsequently, she created images of birds and the natural world. Alongside this were images of iconic buildings in the locality, including features of the built environment which had interested her for a long time. Often these two elements combined together in a print. She developed her interest in linoprinting, enjoying its meditative, slow process, through which images evolved over time.

Her M.A. in Fine Art Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, between 2016-2018, was undertaken in a spirit of curiosity, expressing a need to push the boundaries of her own knowledge and creativity. During this transitional time her work reflected the constant regeneration of the city, explored through techniques such as lithography, drypoint and etching.
In 2020, at the start of the pandemic, she began to visit a small wood near to her home, becoming acquainted with nature in a deeper way, seeing it as a way to reflect on recent experiences and consider new directions for her work.

Current work is inspired by flowers and plant forms, stemming from a long standing connection to the natural world, nurtured in childhood in her father’s garden. Botanical elements, always present in her work, are now beginning to take centre stage. She aims to distill something of their essence and reveal the mystery of their forms.
Her work is based on drawings, from which the prints emerge. Experimentation is key to her work as a printmaker, always aiming to achieve a freer way of working. Linoprinting continues to be her main medium. Often blocks are printed by hand onto thinner Japanese papers, which are then sometimes applied to thicker traditional printmaking papers as chine colle.
Although her work has changed over time, there remains a recognisable style, a visible indication of work evolving from what has gone before. There remains an abiding interest in shape, line and colour.
